Waterproof Technology

The science of staying dry in the heaviest downpours.

The Microporous Membrane

The core of waterproof gear is the membrane (like ePTFE). It contains billions of microscopic pores per square inch. These pores are 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, making it impossible for rain to penetrate, yet 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule, allowing sweat to escape.

  • DWR Coating: Causes water to bead up and roll off the surface.
  • Seam Sealing: Ensures no water leaks through stitch holes.
  • Hydrostatic Head: Rated up to 28,000mm for extreme conditions.
Moisture Vapor Escape

Windproof Defense

Blocking the convective heat loss from wind chill.

CFM Rating

Windproofness is measured in CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). A "True Windproof" fabric has a 0 CFM rating, meaning no wind can penetrate the surface.

Dense Weave

By tightly weaving ultra-fine filaments, manufacturers create a barrier that physically blocks air molecules while maintaining flexibility.

Softshell Hybrid

Softshells offer a balance of wind resistance and high breathability, ideal for high-exertion activities like alpine climbing.

Insulation & Thermal Warmth

Capturing body heat through dead air space.

01

Down Fill

Natural goose or duck down creates high-loft clusters that trap air efficiently. Measured by Fill Power (550 to 900+).

02

Synthetic Loft

Mimics down using polyester fibers. It retains 90% of its warmth even when wet, making it ideal for humid environments.

03

Reflective Linings

Metallic dots or coatings that reflect your body's radiant heat back to you, reducing the need for bulk.

Breathability Matters

Breathability isn't about air coming in; it's about sweat vapor getting out. High-performance fabrics are rated by MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate).
